OTTAWA — For years, Paul Martin was a fixture in the halls of Parliament, as finance minister in Jean Chretien's Liberal government and then as prime minister himself.

Now, a portrait of Martin has been unveiled that will — just as Martin did in real life — displace his former boss. The portrait by renowned artist Paul Wyse depicts Martin standing ready for a debate in the Commons.

It's a reflection on the need for Parliament to shape the policies that affect the every day lives of Canadians, the 77-year-old Martin said after the curtain was pulled to reveal the work.

The Official Portrait of The Hon. Peter Andrew Stewart Milliken

Former Speaker Peter Milliken had his official portrait unveiled last week. Milliken is the longest-serving Speaker in Canadian history, sitting in the chair from 2001 to 2011. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair said the ultimate testament to his “fair-handedness” was the fact that Milliken, who ran as a Liberal, was still elected Speaker when the Conservatives took power. The portrait was painted by Prescott, Ont.-based artist Paul Wyse. The painting shows the former Speaker with his hands on a desk. One hand is open and the other is a fist. Behind Milliken are books containing Hansards.

Portrait of Billy Joel Unveiled at Steinway Hall

US singer-songwriter Billy Joel has become the only non-classical performer to be honoured with a portrait by Paul Wyse at the prestigious Steinway Hall in New York. Joel is only one of two living artists to be featured in the Hall's portrait collection and will hang next to famed Russian pianist Vladimir Horowitz, one of the singer's idols. "I don't know how crazy he'd be about having me that close to him," he said.

Paul Wyse's notable clients include not only Billy Joel, but Blue Rodeo Star Jim Cuddy, and Pianist, conductor and Kennedy Center Award Winner Leon Fleisher. Two portraits of Fleisher by Wyse recently became part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

Two of Paul Wyse's portraits of pianist and conductor Leon Fleisher have become part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.

Leon Fleisher at the Piano, (see drawings) and Leon Fleisher in Performance with the Syracuse Symphony (right) will be the first portraits of Fleisher to be included the museum's collection. Fleisher, the recipient of a prestigious Kennedy Center Award, turns 83 this summer.

Portrait of Andy Orchard Unveiled:

Renowned medieval scholar Andy Orchard will be leaving his post as Provost of Trinity College at the University of Toronto for a position at the University of Oxford – one previously held by J.R.R. Tolkien (U of T news). His official portrait was unveiled at a ceremony held on Sept 10th. Orchard was installed as Trinity's 14th Provost and Vice-Chancellor in September 2007. He received a Pilkington Prize for excellence in teaching in the University of Cambridge in 1998. He honed his administrative skills at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto and previously as Admissions Tutor for Arts at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and as Head of the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge.

Canadian Pacific Railway CEO Fred Green

Fred Green served as President of the Candian Pacific Railway from 2006-2012 after 34 years of service to the company. His portrait hangs in the company's impressive collection dating back to it's founding in 1881. This painting marks my 3rd portrait of North America's top railroad magnates: also included are Jack Koraleski and Jim Young, both of the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha Nebraska.
